With the establishment of the village, traditional crafts have appeared and have become popular everywhere, particularly from Thua Thien hue to Binh Dinh. From the 17th to 18th centuries, the trade of Hoi An ancient town was incredibly prosperous and developed that promoted Thanh Ha pottery products were exported to both Asian countries and Western countries via Hoi An Trading Port.

For some decades, even though the conventional pottery developed with the ups and downs of Hoi An’ business, these always made by all strong enjoyment and profound passion of craftsmen. From generation to generation, all local handicraftsmen are awareness of remaining traditional and unique methods of making pottery- manual ways. One of the different features with other pottery is its products are not roasted in a traditional wood kiln. To maintain and preserve a good reputation, the village began applying a Mandarin system in order to classify artisans by their qualifications and talent.

Artisans are well-trained who mix clay, burn and bake time skillful. Different colors of ceramics are based on the adjustment of firing temperature that brings its products to natural pigments like pink, light brown, light yellow or black.  Specifically, depending on the time of burning and heating in the kiln, the color can be changed shades. This special technique brings the ceramics brightness that is a striking aspect you only recognize in Thanh Ha pottery products. Craftsmen decorate their products with submerged and floating vignettes which are extremely simple but very beautiful and unique.

In addition, this modification makes their products have longer life-span over 50 years. Along with ceramics used in daily life, bricks and tiles of the village, which has a wide variety of shapes and sizes, is also well-known and called “  Yin-yang tiles “. The locals use it to keep their house warmer in winter and cooler in summer. Tourists find it easy to recognize “ Yin-Yang tiles” in the roof of almost house in the old town, especially in Phung Hung and Tan Ky old houses

Along with the prosperous development of the old town and high demand of both domestic and foreign markets nowadays, Thanh Ha villagers starting making a wide range of different products that are rich in artistic value,  typically statues. Thus, in the prevailing trend of handmade craft and serving visitors, 80% of villagers’ products serve as decorations and souvenirs. Villagers still remain antique ceramic pieces from 16-17th centuries and develop modern paintings and sculptures which are breathtaking and vivid.

Located three kilometers west of town, at present, Thanh Ha pottery village has not only become a proud symbol of Hoi An people as well as the cultural heritage, but also a famous destination for massive tourism when to Hoi An.
