It is said that Van Thuy Tu Temple is one of the oldest temples in Phan Thiet city which was built in the beginning of the 60s in the 18th century. Van Thuy Tu Temple is built to worship a god called Lord Whale (Vietnamese: Ca Ong). People, especially fishermen believe that this god protect them from the dangers like bad weather, hurricanes, etc.
Nowadays, Van Thuy Tu Temple has still reserved a lot of ancient items such as fishing boats, some tools to catch fish, etc and the whale skeletons. Annually, a festival organized in Van Thuy Tu Temple called Whale Worshipping Festival (Vietnamese: Cau Ngu Festival) to pray for luck, convenient weather and successful harvest. This festival is taken place on the 20th of the sixth month on the lunar calendar. Additionally, there are some regional rituals like Spring Ritual, Ritual Worshipping Whale, Ritual for the peace and Ritual of death which are held on the 20th day of the second, fourth, seventh and eighth month on the lunar calendar. There are some interesting activities in this day such as folk song performances, traditional games, etc.
Van Thuy Tu Temple is located at 54 Ngu Ong, Duc Thang Ward, Phan Thiet city, binh thuan province. The opening hours are from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm daily. The entrance fee is about VND 20,000 per person and you can ask for a guide if you want.
